Sims 3 Story Progression!?

I'm wondering if I create a house in the sims 3, and not furnish it at ALL, then I grab one of the families in the library and place them in that house. Will story progression automatically buy them what they need or do I need to do that. I just want to fill my neighborhood with people because it fells kinda empty.
