Question about judaism?

If you grew up Christian all your life and so did your parents and their parents and their parents, but you find out that 400 years ago, your great great great great great great great grandfather was Jewish, does that mean you are jewish through hereditary? Or because so many grandfathers didnt practice judaism, do you somehow lose your jewishness.
